Guide to Wedding Day Hair and Makeup

Simple tips for preparing your hair and makeup on your wedding day.

Hair Prep

  • One to two months before the wedding
    • Add some highlights to your hair.
      • The updo looks great with just a few highlights. But not too many!
      • Some sunkissed hair can be added to down hairstyles. Consider getting a lightening of the hairline and a balayage.
    • Frizzy hair? Keratin treatments may be the right choice for you. Hair that has been treated with Keratin is low maintenance and will last for the duration of your honeymoon.
    • Buy your hair extensions, and have them fitted.
    • Get hair products (for yourself and your guests)
      • Hairspray
      • Bobby pins
      • Decorative hair accessories (i.e. Hair combs and flowers
  • The day before or night of your wedding
    • Wash your hair. You will be “dirtying” your hair.
      • Please note that if you’re a “curly-haired girl”, the routine for you will be different. It’s up to you when to wash your hair.
  • Wedding day
    • Wear a shirt with a zip or button. Avoid flannel (it damages the underside of hairstyles).

Makeup Prep

  • Start now
    • Add Retinol and Differin into your skincare routine.
      • If you use any of these products, you must use sunblock.
      • These products cannot be used to wax.
    • Skin problems? For advice, consult a medical esthetician.
    • Try a facial at a reputable spa. This is a great way to relax and it’s good for your skin.
    • Invest in good cleanser and moisturiser.
  • Five to six months before the wedding
    • Stop any injectables or laser treatments.
  • Three months before the wedding
    • You should always do a test run before you decide to spray tan.
  • One to two months before the wedding
    • Retinol and Differin should be stopped. Switch to AHA and BHA acids. These acids are not as strong and encourage new cell growth.
    • Buy a lipstick touch-up. You can buy the best products from Chanel or Dior. You’re worth it. Choose one that feels luscious and comfortable on your lips.
    • Stop getting facials
  • Two weeks before the wedding
    • Avoid sugars and salty foods. Instead, focus on hydrating!
    • Get your waxing done. Please do not wax before your wedding. Freshly waxed skin does not hold makeup. Retinol and Differin should be stopped at least two weeks before waxing. Retinol will cause your skin to rip off when you wax.
    • Stop exfoliating. Stop using AHA and BHA acids.
    • Try not to try something new!
